Worked for the Frankfurter Filmproduktion from 1987 to 1997. During that time he produced numerous tv-movies and shows e.g. 15 tv movies based on novels by Rosamunde Pilcher, shot in England; 26 episodes of „5 Freunde“ based on the books of Enid Blyton in co-production with Zenith North; the crime mini series „Kommissar Beck“ as a co-production with sweden, denmark and germany.

1997 one of the founders of U5 Filmproduktion, which by now produced more than 50 tv movies and documentaries, e.g. „Prisoners of Paradies“, a canadian-british-german co-production, nominated for the Oscar in 2003, and „Harmony“, inspired by HRH Prince Charles.

Karl-Eberhard Schäfer is involved in film politics. He is chairman of the Vereinigung Hessischer Filmschaffender e.V. and was a long time member of the committee of Hessen-Invest-Film.
